GTA VI Targets 1440p/30fps on Base PS5, CPU Bottleneck Rules Out 60fps
Digital Foundry confirms GTA VI will run at native 1440p and 30fps on base PS5, citing CPU limitations — not GPU or software — as the definitive barrier to 60fps.

Digital Foundry has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will operate at native 1440p resolution and a locked 30 frames per second on the standard PlayStation 5 console. The analysis, based on forensic examination of the 26-minute gameplay trailer, verifies full ray tracing and global illumination are active — and that no upscaling techniques were used in the recorded footage.
Why 30fps Is Fixed, Not Optional
The 30fps cap is not a design decision but a hard constraint imposed by hardware. According to Digital Foundry, the PS5’s Zen 2 CPU reaches maximum utilization under GTA VI’s NPC artificial intelligence and physics simulation loads. Achieving 60fps would demand a processor architecture comparable to AMD’s Ryzen X3D series — a chip absent from all current-generation consoles. Neither firmware updates nor performance modes can overcome this limitation on existing hardware.
No Upscaling Detected in Trailer Footage
A key technical observation from the analysis is that Rockstar captured the official gameplay without enabling any upscalers. Digital Foundry identified this absence through the lack of telltale visual artifacts associated with upscaling algorithms. While PlayStation 5 Pro may support PSSR at launch, the team judges full PSSR implementation for GTA VI on day one as unlikely — even though it remains theoretically feasible.
Rockstar’s Consistent Console Performance Pattern
This approach aligns with Rockstar’s prior releases. Both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles at 30fps. Higher frame rates appeared first on PC and later on next-generation platforms. As of mid-2026, Red Dead Redemption 2 still lacks an official 60fps patch for current-gen consoles.
PC Release Timing and Frame Rate Expectations
No release date has been confirmed for the PC version of GTA VI. Citing precedent from Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — and referencing commentary from former Rockstar animator Mike York, reported by TechRadar — 60fps “out the gate” was never intended for base consoles. Based on historical timing, the PC edition is anticipated in late 2027 or 2028.
Xbox Series Performance Outlook
Performance expectations differ across Xbox hardware. The Series X is projected to deliver output in the same range as the base PS5. In contrast, the Series S is forecast to render as low as 720p, employing dynamic resolution scaling — a performance stratification mirroring Rockstar’s multi-tiered rollout strategy seen with Grand Theft Auto V.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches globally on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
