Sony Interactive Entertainment disclosed that "Marvel's Wolverine" achieved sales of 2.4 million units during the initial 50 days following its release. This commercial performance fell short of expectations when compared to previous titles developed by Insomniac Games. The company simultaneously outlined its strategy to make tangible progress toward launching the next-generation console, the PlayStation 6, within the upcoming fiscal year.

Wolverine Sales vs. Spider-Man Benchmark

The sales figures were announced during Sony’s earnings conference for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. The game, which launched exclusively on the PS5 on September 15, reached this milestone amid mixed critical reception prior to its debut. It currently stands as the lowest-rated title from the studio in nearly a decade.

A comparison with "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" highlights the disparity in commercial outcomes. That title surpassed 2.5 million units sold on its launch day alone, despite both games being produced by the same developer. The contrast underscores the different market responses to the two major exclusive releases.

Gaming Sector Revenue Growth

Despite the limited relative sales of "Wolverine," game releases contributed to growth in Sony’s gaming and network services segment during the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. Revenue for this sector increased by 9% year-on-year, reaching 1.2085 trillion Japanese yen, equivalent to approximately $7.64 billion.

The corporation raised its forecast for total annual sales to 4.83 trillion Japanese yen, or about $30.5 billion. This projection represents a 6% increase over previous estimates issued in July. Sony attributed the upward revision to strong sales of third-party developed games. These forecasts precede the anticipated release of "Grand Theft Auto 6," which is expected to provide a significant boost to PlayStation’s business operations.

Hardware Metrics and User Base

In terms of hardware, Sony reported selling 2.6 million PS5 consoles during the second quarter. Monthly active users on the PlayStation platform reached 127 million. The company noted that new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining, a trend considered expected at this stage of the device’s lifecycle. However, they emphasized that the platform’s user base continues to grow steadily.

PS6 Development Timeline

Looking ahead, Sony confirmed its objective to achieve concrete progress in preparing the next-generation "PlayStation 6" platform during the next fiscal year. No official date has been announced for the reveal of the device, nor have specific technical specifications been released.

Lin Tao, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, stated that the company intends to enhance user engagement and revenue through the launch of strong titles and expanded services. She added that these efforts will run parallel to continued preparations for the next generation of gaming platforms, suggesting further details regarding the PS6 may emerge in the coming year.
