New Apple CEO John Ternus is reportedly pushing to distribute iPhone launches throughout the year, moving away from traditional spring and fall cycles.
Apple’s flagship smartphone schedule could undergo a significant transformation, with product announcements potentially distributed across more months of the calendar year rather than being concentrated in spring and fall. This shift aligns with efforts by new CEO John Ternus, who assumed leadership in early September, to accelerate development timelines and encourage greater experimentation within engineering teams as artificial intelligence reshapes the technology sector.
A Bloomberg report indicates that while these changes are under consideration, no official launch calendar has been established. Any overhaul of the release cadence would likely require substantial time to implement, given that Apple’s product-development processes have been refined over many years. Consequently, a rapid transition away from the company’s historical rhythm remains unlikely despite the internal push for agility.
Rumors regarding a split iPhone schedule suggest one possible direction for the lineup, although Apple has not confirmed any specific products or dates. The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to arrive ahead of the spring 2027 releases, joining the iPhone Duo—Apple’s rumored foldable model—which is also expected before the spring 2027 models. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e, and the iPhone Air 2 are all anticipated for release in spring 2027.
Ternus is reportedly seeking a flatter organizational structure between senior leadership and engineering teams. Several managers overseeing engineering projects have allegedly been removed from their roles and given several weeks to find other positions within Apple. Additionally, some divisions have faced budget and headcount caps, while others have been instructed to reduce marketing spending.
The company also considered eliminating approximately 5,000 AppleCare service positions and shifting certain responsibilities to AI, though that plan was suspended. According to the report, the broader objective is for Apple to deliver more output with fewer employees. This represents a potentially significant change for a corporation long associated with tightly controlled, methodical development cycles.
Other products said to be in Apple’s pipeline include a new HomePod mini, an iPad mini featuring an OLED display, and an updated Apple TV 4K. The list also includes AirPods equipped with cameras and MacBooks with touchscreens.
Whether Apple formalizes a multi-window iPhone strategy remains unresolved. However, such a shift would provide its flagship phone range with more frequent moments in the market, reducing reliance on a single annual launch cycle.
