Microsoft is testing Disc2Digital, a feature allowing Xbox users to convert physical game discs into permanent digital licenses for easier digital transition.

Microsoft is working on a new feature called Disc2Digital that aims to enable Xbox users to convert their physical game discs into permanent digital licenses. This development could facilitate the shift toward a digital distribution future while preserving existing game libraries.
A recent report revealed that Microsoft has already begun internal testing of Disc2Digital. The feature was first hinted at within the Xbox app on PCs in May, indicating that the company is preparing to introduce it as part of its future offerings.
The Disc2Digital process involves inserting a compatible game disc into an Xbox console and installing the game. The system then grants the user a permanent digital license for that game. Once converted, the game can be played digitally, allowing access to features such as streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass subscribers or playing on PCs and other devices supporting Xbox Play Anywhere.
The feature is also reported to support multi-disc games and editions that include downloadable content (DLC), providing users with an experience comparable to owning a full digital copy.
According to the report, Disc2Digital will be limited to Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S game discs. It will not support discs from Xbox 360 or the original Xbox. Additionally, some older Xbox One discs may be incompatible due to differences in manufacturing methods.
Although the game is converted to a digital license, the physical disc remains usable. However, selling or lending the disc will transfer the associated digital ownership rights, in line with the protection mechanism Microsoft is testing.
The report suggests that Disc2Digital may be part of Microsoft's preparations for the upcoming Xbox console, internally known as Project Helix. It remains undecided whether this new console will include a disc drive. If released without one, Disc2Digital could provide a practical method for users to migrate their physical game collections to the new platform.
This initiative comes as the gaming industry gradually shifts toward digital distribution. Meanwhile, Sony has faced criticism after announcing it will cease production of new PlayStation game discs starting in 2028, without revealing a similar mechanism to transfer physical game ownership to digital formats.
