U.S. Navy Tests AIM-424 Malice Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile
The U.S. Navy is developing and testing the AIM-424 Malice, a new long-range air-to-air missile with a range exceeding 250 nautical miles, designed for F/A-18, F-35, and F/A-XX aircraft.

The U.S. Navy is currently developing and testing a new long-range air-to-air missile designated AIM-424 Malice. The weapon is intended to significantly surpass the capabilities of the existing AIM-120 and is also expected to exceed those of the recently revealed AIM-174B.
Development and platform integration
The AIM-424 Malice is being developed for deployment on the F/A-18, F-35, and F/A-XX aircraft families. According to Aviation Week magazine, the missile was officially announced on 22 August. A U.S. Navy spokesperson stated in a formal release that the next-generation Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM) program aims to strengthen fleet defense and “maintain decisive air superiority against advanced threats.”
The spokesperson added that the AIM-424, also known as Malice, directly supports the Department of Defense’s contribution to integrated deterrence by extending range, combat effectiveness, and destructive capability for naval aviation and Marine Corps forces defending U.S. fleets, interests, and national territory. Specific performance details and fielding timelines remain classified to safeguard operational security.
Strategic context and industrial involvement
U.S. Patriot and THAAD missile inventories have declined due to operations linked to conflict with Iran, prompting the Pentagon to seek lower-cost alternatives to offset shortfalls. Phil Jasper, CEO of RTX, emphasized in a statement that enhancing fleet defense and sustaining air dominance is essential against emerging long-range aerial threats.
Jasper noted that RTX’s advanced technology team is central to achieving this objective through the AIM-424’s development. He described the missile as delivering a “transformational leap” in air superiority capability for naval forces, citing its extended range, lethal power, and combat effectiveness — specifically stating it “exceeds the range of any threat.”
Origins and technical lineage
The AIM-424 concept may have been under development for more than a decade. In 2017, a senior U.S. defense official disclosed the Long-Range Engagement Weapon (LREW) concept during a defense industry conference; LREW represents one of several potential conceptual foundations associated with the AIM-424 program.
A presentation slide revealed a dual-stage air-to-air missile concept designed for internal carriage on stealth aircraft. Fiscal Year 2017 budget documents indicated that the LREW concept had completed a successful two-year demonstration phase and that its underlying technology was transitioning to military services.
Operational drivers and comparative threats
The U.S. Navy faces mounting pressure to extend the strike range of its carrier-based air power. China has deployed anti-ship ballistic missiles and air-launched cruise missiles with ranges exceeding 1,000 nautical miles — a capability requiring a naval countermeasure capable of engaging the aircraft launching those weapons.
In parallel, the Department of Defense awarded Raytheon a $22.9 billion contract to accelerate production of Tomahawk missiles. This initiative coincides with preparations by the Navy and Air Force to field the new joint tactical AIM-260 missile, developed by Lockheed Martin.

According to specifications published by the U.S. Navy website, the AIM-424 Malice is powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor. Its physical dimensions are 4.11 meters in length, 0.34 meters in diameter, and 0.67 meters in wingspan. The missile weighs 680.4 kilograms. Its range exceeds 250 nautical miles — equivalent to 463 kilometers.
