WhatsApp Tests Voice-to-Text Feature for Editable Messages

WhatsApp is testing a new voice-to-text functionality that allows users to speak instead of typing, with the app converting spoken words into written text. Users can review and edit the transcribed message before sending it—a move aimed at simplifying the composition of longer messages and accelerating in-app communication.

How the voice-to-text button works

According to a report by WABetaInfo, a site dedicated to tracking WhatsApp updates, the feature appears in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.26.37.8. The update introduces a dedicated button inside the message composition field to activate speech-to-text conversion.

Once the button is pressed, users can speak their intended message aloud. WhatsApp then transcribes the speech into text. After transcription, users may review the resulting message and make any necessary edits prior to delivery.

On-device speech processing

Available information indicates the feature relies on language packs downloaded directly onto the user’s device. This enables speech processing and transcription to occur locally—on the phone itself—rather than relying entirely on external servers.

This on-device approach permits use of the feature even in certain offline scenarios where internet connectivity is unavailable. It also adds a layer of privacy by keeping speech processing confined to the user’s device.

Difference from voice messages

The new capability differs fundamentally from WhatsApp’s standard voice message function. Instead of sending an audio recording to the recipient, the system produces a conventional text message that can be read immediately.

The feature remains under development. WhatsApp has not announced an official rollout date for all users. Its inclusion in the beta version does not guarantee imminent public release.
