Argentina's Scaloni Faces Challenge Balancing Experience and Youth for 2026 World Cup
Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni must balance veteran players with emerging talent to sustain success and provide Messi a fitting final World Cup.

Argentina's national football team arrives in Kansas City with a squad largely unchanged from their 2022 World Cup-winning roster, featuring 17 players from that tournament. This continuity reflects Lionel Scaloni’s consistent selection strategy that has yielded three major trophies since 2021.
Scaloni’s tenure has been marked by an unprecedented record: winning three consecutive tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. Such success is rare, with only Italy and Brazil having defended World Cup titles in the past, the latter achieving it in 1962.
Challenges of Sustaining World Cup Success
Defending a World Cup title has proven difficult in recent decades. Since 2000, only France in 2022 progressed beyond the group stage as reigning champions, while Germany, Spain, Italy, and France previously exited early. The expanded 48-team format and a favorable draw in 2026 may improve Argentina's prospects.
Despite the squad’s cohesion, concerns arise regarding the advancing age of key players. Nine members, including Lionel Messi—who will be 39 during his sixth World Cup—are over 30. Other important veterans include Emiliano Martinez and Rodrigo De Paul. Conversely, only three players are under 25, highlighting a limited infusion of youth.
Physical Demands on Key Players
The physical toll on several core players is notable. Eleven squad members participated in the 2024 Copa America and the recent Club World Cup, resulting in continuous play over three seasons. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez and striker Julian Alvarez have each played 121 matches for club and country since the 2024-25 season began.
Alvarez recently managed an ankle injury, and Fernandez's heavy workload could impact his performance despite his current fitness. Alexis Mac Allister, with 119 appearances over two seasons, has experienced a marked decline in form, prompting public criticism from former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant, who noted Mac Allister appeared physically diminished following a pre-season injury.
Scaloni’s Selection Strategy
Scaloni is expected to rely heavily on the core group responsible for previous successes. Seven starters from the 2022 World Cup final are anticipated to feature in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria. Injuries have limited the potential inclusion of players like Julian Alvarez, Nicolas Tagliafico, and Nahuel Molina.
Players such as Cristian Romero, Nicolas Otamendi, Fernandez, De Paul, Mac Allister, and Messi are set to reprise their roles, with Lautaro Martinez stepping in for Alvarez upfront. This lineup reflects a team experienced in winning, yet questions remain about whether integrating younger talent could enhance Argentina’s chances in the tournament’s later stages.
Potential for Youth Integration
Scaloni’s cautious approach is evident in the left-back position. With Tagliafico sidelined, 21-year-old Valentin Barco—who has impressed in recent friendlies and scored in two of Argentina’s last three matches—is expected to be overlooked in favor of Lisandro Martinez. Martinez’s defensive reliability contrasts with Barco’s attacking dynamism, though the latter’s energy might benefit the aging squad.
Giuliano Simeone is projected to start at right-back in an unfamiliar role, covering for Molina and Montiel as they recover from injuries. This temporary adjustment underscores the limited options among younger defenders ready for full participation.
Spotlight on Nico Paz
The most significant debate centers on Nico Paz, a 21-year-old midfielder who has excelled in Italy’s Serie A with Como. Under Cesc Fabregas’s coaching, Paz contributed 13 goals and seven assists last season, helping Como secure Champions League qualification. He was honored as Serie A’s Best Midfielder and is reportedly attracting interest from Real Madrid.
Paz’s creative style and willingness to take risks differ from the recent performances of veterans like Mac Allister. Although Paz is expected to start on the bench due to a minor knee injury, Scaloni may need to consider introducing him if the team’s performance falters.
Strategic Decisions Ahead
Scaloni previously demonstrated a willingness to make impactful changes by bringing Enzo Fernandez into the starting lineup during the 2022 World Cup group stage, which altered the tournament’s course for Argentina. Maintaining loyalty to proven players is a hallmark of his management, but the path to a fourth consecutive trophy may require difficult decisions, especially given the challenging knockout stage projections.
If Argentina tops Group J over Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, they would face the runner-up from Group H—likely Uruguay—in the round of 32. Success there could lead to a last-16 match against the runner-up from Group D or G, with potential quarter-final opposition including Portugal, setting up a probable final World Cup encounter between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
By that stage, Scaloni will need to have identified his strongest lineup to offer Messi an optimal farewell, potentially incorporating one or two younger players from the squad.
