During this match, Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria's goalkeeper Luca Zidane, equaling the World Cup all-time scoring record of 16 goals held by German Miroslav Klose.
Messi's first victory against the Zidane family came in the 12th round of the 2005-2006 season, when he faced Zinedine Zidane, Luca's father. In that match, Messi assisted Samuel Eto'o's opening goal, while Brazilian player scored twice. This was Messi's only encounter with the 1998 World Cup champion.
