Luka Modrić expressed strong criticism following Croatia's elimination from the World Cup, particularly targeting the decision to cancel a late equalizing goal. He argued that the television replays did not clearly show any contact or offside that would justify overturning the goal, which he believes directly altered the match outcome.

The Croatian star also voiced his longstanding opposition to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, stating that he "hates" it due to what he described as unfair and selective application in certain situations, even though he acknowledged that VAR can be useful in other cases.

Modrić called for stricter limitations on VAR interventions, suggesting they should be confined to cases that are completely clear and indisputable. He emphasized that this approach is necessary to prevent major matches from being influenced by controversial decisions and to maintain the enjoyment of football.

Additionally, he addressed a penalty awarded against Croatia, insisting that it was an incorrect call. Modrić pointed out that there was mutual pulling between players inside the penalty area, implying that the decision lacked justification.

Concluding his remarks, the Croatian captain stressed that deciding critical matches in a tournament as significant as the World Cup should not rely on contentious rulings. He stated that such decisions raise serious questions about refereeing fairness in the sport.
