World Cup 2026
Despite recent political tensions, the 2026 World Cup could see the USA and Iran face off in the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Although political and military tensions have marked relations between the United States and Iran in recent months, the 2026 FIFA World Cup might set the stage for a different scenario, potentially bringing the two national teams into a highly anticipated match.
The Iranian team will begin its World Cup campaign on June 16 against New Zealand, followed by group-stage matches against Belgium and Egypt. Meanwhile, the United States, as the host nation, will open its tournament on June 13 facing Paraguay, then play against Australia and Turkey in the group phase.
According to The Sun, the tournament’s format prevents the two teams from meeting during the group stage, as the United States is placed in Group D while Iran is in Group C. Consequently, any encounter between the two sides would only be possible in the knockout rounds.
The likelihood of a USA-Iran match increases if both teams finish second in their respective groups, which would set up a round of 32 meeting. Alternatively, if each team tops its group and advances past the round of 32, they could face each other in the round of 16.
A potential quarterfinal clash remains possible but would depend on a more complex sequence of results in the elimination rounds.
Historically, Iran has not progressed beyond the group stage in previous World Cup appearances. The United States reached the round of 16 in the 2022 Qatar World Cup before being eliminated by the Netherlands, and did not qualify for the 2018 tournament in Russia.
The best World Cup achievement for the United States remains third place in the inaugural 1930 tournament, a milestone the team aims to match or surpass while hosting the 2026 edition on home soil.
