Referees to Earn $100,000 Each at 2026 World Cup

Significant earnings are no longer exclusive to football players and coaches; referees of the sport are also set to receive substantial compensation in recognition of their crucial role in managing one of the world's most challenging and popular sports.

The British newspaper Mirror revealed that each referee officiating at the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will earn $100,000 for their participation in this major football event.

Moreover, referees can receive additional bonuses if they continue to officiate in the tournament's advanced stages. A referee assigned to manage the final match will be awarded a significantly higher sum.

The Times newspaper noted that these payments are double the amounts referees received at the 2024 World Cup. It also mentioned that some English referees, including Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor, could earn total sums exceeding £325,000.

Expansion to 48 Teams in the World Cup

The upcoming World Cup marks a new chapter with the participation of 48 national teams. FIFA, the international football federation, increased the number of participating teams to align with the sport's growth across many regions worldwide.
