Sniper Posts Stir Debate at 2026 World Cup Matches in the US
The presence of snipers in stadiums during the 2026 World Cup in the United States has drawn attention amid the country's high rates of gun violence.
Security measures at the 2026 World Cup have become a central topic since the tournament's kickoff, particularly in the United States.
This focus is evident as most of the matches are scheduled to take place in the US, a country known for some of the highest rates of gun violence globally.
One notable aspect of the host nation's security protocol that has caught the public's eye is the deployment of snipers inside the stadiums.
This practice is common in major events held on American soil, where numerous NFL stadiums have designated areas for military personnel equipped with high-precision rifles, known as "sniper nests."
These snipers are typically stationed at elevated points within the stadiums, allowing them to monitor the majority of the crowd and intervene if necessary. Additionally, specialists are assigned to protect both the interior and surrounding areas of the venues.
According to Globo, "The primary reason for the presence of snipers is to prevent terrorist attacks or respond swiftly if such incidents occur, or in case armed assailants attempt to attack the public."
Data from the website "gunviolence," which tracks gun-related violence in the United States, reported 206 mass shooting incidents in 2026 alone.
The report added, "Clearly, this measure is just one part of a broad security system implemented at the World Cup and other public events in the United States. This standard protocol is used at matches, large concerts, political speeches, and any event with a large audience."
The final match of the 2026 World Cup is set to take place at MetLife Stadium on July 19.
