260 Million Euros: Sweden Uncovers Russian-Speaking Money Laundering Networks
Swedish authorities have uncovered Russian-speaking networks suspected of laundering approximately 260 million euros through suspicious financial transactions, a phenomenon described as expanding to a semi-industrial level.

Swedish authorities have revealed the existence of Russian-speaking networks suspected of involvement in money laundering within the country, involving suspicious financial transactions worth approximately 260 million euros, a phenomenon believed to be expanding to a "semi-industrial" level.
According to a report published by Radio France Internationale (RFI), the Swedish Financial Intelligence Unit detected these transactions and exposed a mechanism relying on forged invoices and thousands of interconnected companies, aimed at passing funds through while giving them an appearance of legality.
Marcus Villner, the head of operations at the center, stated that the system includes large numbers of people who contribute to its operation, emphasizing the need to address the problem comprehensively rather than merely pursuing and arresting isolated individuals. He called for proactive action from the first signs of suspicious activities.
The networks include individuals from Georgia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Russia, and Latvia, with Russian being used in their activities, according to the report.
The report noted that Sweden is particularly vulnerable to this type of crime due to its system's reliance on trust more than oversight, which money launderers exploit. Additionally, the ease of opening bank accounts and establishing companies allows them to create new entities to facilitate their operations.
Villner explained that these practices may exist in other countries without authorities realizing their scale, noting that combating them remains difficult due to the constant renewal of companies and identities used in such activities.
The report concluded that strengthening cooperation between countries and relevant authorities is an essential element in combating these networks and limiting their ability to continue money laundering operations.
