40,000 Heavy Bombs: New Details on Trump's Deal with Israel

U.S. and Israeli reports have revealed new details about the large-scale munitions deal that President Donald Trump’s administration plans to sell to Israel, valued at approximately $2.8 billion and including tens of thousands of heavy bombs designated for the Israeli Air Force.

According to a U.S. official familiar with the deal, the package includes around 40,000 bombs, each weighing nearly 900 kilograms, distributed between 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs. The relevant congressional committees have been informally notified of the deal in preparation for review.

According to Israeli reports, the package also includes approximately 20,000 I-2000 penetration units, used in conjunction with heavy ordnance to target fortified facilities and bunkers.

These bombs, weighing around 2,000 pounds, are among the heaviest conventional aerial munitions used in military operations. Israel has previously used similar ordnance in Gaza and Lebanon, sparking criticism over their use in densely populated areas.

The new details suggest this deal could be one of the largest single shipments of heavy munitions ever provided to Israel, with Israeli reports indicating it will be funded through U.S. military aid allocated to Israel, according to Israel’s Channel 14.

The Deal Before Congress

The deal remains under review within the U.S. Congress, as political debate intensifies over the scale of military support provided to Israel.

The proposal comes ahead of the November midterm congressional elections, amid declining public support in the United States for aid to Israel—particularly among Democratic voters. A June survey by Quinnipiac University found that 48% of voters and 66% of Democrats believe the U.S. provides excessive support to Israel.

Former President Joe Biden’s administration had temporarily suspended shipments of heavy bombs to Israel in 2024 due to concerns over their use in populated areas, before the Trump administration lifted the restrictions upon returning to the White House.
