Democrats have secured control of both chambers of the US Congress after winning 240 seats in the House of Representatives compared to 147 for Republicans, according to the latest tally, while results from 48 districts remain pending.

In the Senate, Democrats have locked down 54 seats against 44 for Republicans, with the Alaska and Mississippi races still undecided. Their count could rise to 56 seats if they win the remaining two contests.

Voters had chosen all 435 members of the House of Representatives, along with 35 members of the 100-seat Senate.

Before the elections, Republicans controlled the House with 218 seats versus 214 for Democrats, and the Senate with 53 seats versus 47 for Democrats.

The results place President Donald Trump before an opposition-controlled Congress for the final two years of his term, giving Democrats the ability to block his legislative initiatives, control congressional committees, and open investigations into his administration's decisions.
