University celebrations in the US state of Florida turned into scenes of chaos and panic after a shooting erupted near an American football stadium on Saturday evening, injuring at least 12 people, including 6 children, amid security mobilization and investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident.

The incident occurred in the city of Tallahassee, near "Bragg Memorial Stadium" belonging to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (Florida A&M), coinciding with celebratory events organized by the university for its alumni reunion, which saw large numbers of participants gather.

According to local police, 11 people were shot, while another person was injured during the incident, noting that at least 3 of the injured are suffering from serious injuries, while the condition of 9 others was described as stable.

A fight turns into a shooting

Preliminary investigations revealed that a fight broke out between several individuals in a crowded area near the stadium, following the end of an American football game, before the dispute escalated into a shooting that caused panic among those present.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said that security forces were already deployed around the stadium to secure the events, explaining that approximately 24 officers were in the area when the confrontation began.

He indicated that initial information suggests the incident is linked to a dispute between two or three individuals, without the exact circumstances leading to the use of weapons becoming clear yet.

Eyewitnesses recounted moments of chaos following the sound of gunfire, as attendees rushed to flee the area, amidst stampedes that caused additional injuries.

Student Jayden Dubois told local station "WCTV" that he heard gunshots and saw crowds running in different directions, before being pushed and falling to the ground, then noticing a person lying near him.

The university issued a security warning calling on those near the stadium to shelter in safe places or move away from the incident site, while Florida State University issued a similar precautionary alert to its students and staff.
