China Conducts Joint Air-Sea Drills Near Disputed Scarborough Shoal

The Chinese army confirmed on Sunday that it had carried out combined operations involving its naval and air forces. These maneuvers took place within the shallow waters of a disputed territory located in the South China Sea.

Location and Sovereignty Claims

The training activities occurred in the maritime zone and airspace surrounding the island known as "Scarborough." Beijing refers to this feature as "Huangyan Dao." Manila also asserts sovereignty over the area, identifying it locally as "Panatag Shoal" or "Bajo de Masinloc," according to Reuters.

Military Justification for Exercises

A statement released by the Southern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army via the WeChat application characterized the drills as a necessary response. The command cited actions by "some countries" that allegedly undermine regional peace and stability.

The military explained that the primary objective of these exercises was to test and enhance combat capabilities. Specifically, the operations aimed to protect China’s territorial sovereignty, along with its maritime rights and interests.
