The Colombian government has handed over Giovanni Andrés Rojas, widely known by his alias "The Spider," to US authorities. Rojas serves as a commander within the "Border Command," an armed faction that splintered from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). This transfer marks the first extradition of its kind since President Abelardo de la Espriella assumed office last August.

Local media reports indicate that Rojas was surrendered to American officials at a military air base near Barranquilla. The process involved transporting him from La Picota prison in Bogotá under heightened security protocols. US authorities accuse Rojas of crimes related to drug trafficking and criminal conspiracy, specifically citing alleged activities in both Colombia and Ecuador.

Political Context and Policy Shift

During the handover ceremony, President De la Espriella stated that his administration would not allow Colombia to become a sanctuary for individuals wanted by international justice. He noted that he has signed 94 decisions regarding extraditions to other countries since the start of his term. This action reflects a distinct shift in state policy toward armed groups. The new administration has terminated negotiations with several factions, including FARC dissidents, and revoked the status of certain leaders as peace negotiators.

Background of Arrest and Negotiations

Rojas previously served as the head of the delegation representing the Border Command during peace talks with the former government led by Gustavo Petro. His arrest occurred in February 2025 at a hotel in the capital, following a Red Notice issued by Interpol. For a period, the execution of his extradition order remained suspended while he participated in dialogue initiatives under the previous administration.

In August, President De la Espriella ordered the completion of Rojas’s extradition to the United States. This directive also covered four other members of armed groups who had been engaged in negotiations with the prior government. These transfers had been halted during the active phase of those talks. Under Petro’s tenure, the state pursued a strategy termed "Total Peace," aiming to negotiate with the National Liberation Army (ELN), FARC dissidents, and other armed entities to end decades of conflict.
