Germany and Britain Commit to Continued Support for Ukraine

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz have agreed to sustain intensive collaboration between their countries, advance the implementation of the Kensington Treaty, and continue backing Ukraine.

During a phone call on Tuesday, Mertz congratulated Burnham on his new position. Both leaders expressed their intention to maintain close cooperation between Britain and Germany, as well as to further promote the progress of the Kensington Treaty.

Regarding the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the German Chancellor and British Prime Minister concurred on providing comprehensive support to Kyiv and increasing pressure on Russia. They stated that their objective is to reach serious negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.

The Kensington Treaty, a bilateral friendship agreement, was signed in London on July 17, 2025, by Chancellor Mertz and Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer.
