Germany: Drone and Explosives Found After Attempted Airport Attack

German media outlets, including public broadcasters NDR and WDR, and newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, reported Tuesday that German investigators found a third drone and materials suspected to be explosives connected to this month's attempted attack on Leipzig-Halle Airport.

The reports stated that authorities discovered the drone on August 14, ten days after the incident, located west of the airport, where investigators also found approximately 50 grams of a substance suspected to be the military explosive compound HMX.

The federal prosecutor's office did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters. According to security sources cited in German media reports, there is suspicion of involvement by Russian intelligence in the attack—an allegation denied by Moscow.

On August 4, a drone loaded with explosives was detected near an Antonov cargo aircraft used to transport military supplies.

Investigators also suspect a second drone may have collided with a DHL cargo plane shortly after the airport’s temporary closure.

The airport serves as a key military logistics and supply hub for NATO and Ukrainian carrier Antonov Airlines, which transports military aid.
