Iranian Foreign Minister Warns Against Seizing Foreign Assets for Future Claims

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Friday that confiscating the assets of another country to settle unrelated future claims represents a "dangerous precedent."

In a post on the platform X, Araghchi wrote, "Those who celebrate these funds or seek to benefit from them should remember that once governments normalize confiscation, no one's assets will remain safe. The resulting chaos will be neither pleasant nor peaceful."

His remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's statements on Thursday, in which Trump declared that "any damage inflicted on ships, cargo, or related entities from now until further notice will be paid for from Iranian funds held and controlled by the United States."

Trump added on the platform Truth Social that such damages "could be very substantial," but considered charging them to Iranian funds held in Washington as "fair and just."
