Libya’s Power Outages Trigger Nationwide Blackouts, Cripple Water Supply
Widespread electricity blackouts across western and central Libya have plunged multiple regions into total darkness and halted all water distribution, as the Great Man-Made River Authority confirmed full operational shutdown of its pumping stations.

Multiple Libyan regions have descended into total darkness following widespread electricity outages, with cascading effects on water supply after several pumping and distribution facilities ceased operations.
Blackouts Spread Across Western and Central Regions
Total power failure struck Libya’s western and central areas, recurring recently amid multiple reported causes. The disruptions have fueled public tension and sustained protests, including road blockades in several localities.
Al-Khums Station Failure Darkens Central Coastline
In northern Libya, the Sirte Distribution Administration of the General Electricity Company announced that the Al-Khums power station had gone offline. This outage extended total darkness across central Libya—from the eastern coastal area of Ahrawa to Sirte, and further south to Abu Qurayn and Al-Jufra.
The Distribution Administration did not specify the cause of the failure. Local reports cited an explosion near the station.
Grid Fragility Amplifies Systemic Impact
The incident occurs against a backdrop of mounting strain on Libya’s national electricity infrastructure. Recurrent breakdowns and unplanned shutdowns of generation units and substations mean even minor failures at key installations rapidly propagate across large segments of the grid.
Emergency Equipment Deployment Underway
Earlier in August, the General Electricity Company announced the allocation of five electrical transformers—of varying capacities—to reinforce the distribution network in the western region, aiming to bolster system resilience against faults.
Water Network Halts Entirely Amid Power Collapse
Concurrently with the blackouts, the Great Man-Made River Authority—a government body responsible for water distribution—confirmed that all pumping stations under its operational oversight had ceased functioning due to the electricity interruption.
In an official statement, the Authority stated that the blackout caused complete operational failure across its system: from wellfield zones through the Tarhouna pumping station in northwestern Libya, and extending to additional stations.
The Authority affirmed that all technical and engineering teams remain on standby to immediately restart pumps and stations once power is restored, in order to maintain continuous water supply and ensure delivery to citizens.
Repeated electricity outages across Libya have ignited widespread public anger, escalating to sit-ins and closures of governmental and official institutions—including in the capital, Tripoli.
These outages have persisted for weeks, affecting most Libyan provinces and inflicting major losses—particularly on traders and owners of industrial enterprises.
