French President Emmanuel Macron said today that he held a conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Ali Al-Zaidi, and affirmed in a post on the X platform that the man's mission, tasked with forming a government, "is crucial for the future of Iraq, in extremely difficult regional circumstances."
Macron emphasized that "Iraq's enjoyment of stability and sovereignty, and its full capacity to determine its own destiny, is fundamental for the security of the Middle East as well as for the security of Europe."
Macron also addressed in his post the drone attack which claimed the life of a French soldier in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on 12 March last.
He wrote: "I also recalled my wish for a swift conclusion to the investigation regarding the attack that killed Arnaud Fréon and injured several of his comrades in arms," according to his expression.
Al-Zaidi was tasked on 27 April with forming the government shortly after his nomination by the "Coordination Framework," instead of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, whose nomination was met with opposition from the United States and its President Donald Trump.
