Milei: Winds of Change Favor Argentina in Falklands Dispute

Argentine President Javier Milei said on Thursday that "winds of change" are favoring Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands, noting Washington's readiness to reconsider its neutral position on the ongoing dispute between Argentina and Britain, according to AFP.

In a nationwide address focusing on the South Atlantic archipelago under British sovereignty, Milei stated, "There are winds of change blowing across the world, and they are favorable to our claim."

Argentina and Britain fought a war over the islands in 1982. Four decades after the conflict, tensions remain high between the two nations, according to AFP.

Argentina's national football team displayed a banner reading "Falkland Islands are Argentine" after defeating England 2-1 in the World Cup semifinals earlier this year. FIFA later imposed a fine of $321,000 on the Argentine Football Association.

The United States officially recognizes the UK's de facto administration of the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls "Las Malvinas," without taking sides on the conflicting sovereignty claims.

However, President Donald Trump said on Monday that the U.S. is reviewing its position on the Falkland Islands, following reports that Washington threatened to challenge British sovereignty over the islands unless the UK increases its defense spending.

Last week, the Daily Telegraph reported that the proposal concerning the archipelago was part of a broader set of measures being prepared by the Pentagon to encourage NATO allies to fulfill their commitments on defense spending.

Trump told reporters at the White House, responding to a question about whether the U.S. is reviewing its stance on the Falkland Islands, "I always review every position, and this is just one among many."

Milei, surrounded by members of his government, affirmed that Argentina would not remain "idle" and announced stricter sanctions against companies linked to oil projects in the Falkland Islands.

British-Israeli Oil Project

On Tuesday, Argentine groups announced legal action to halt a British-Israeli oil project off the coast of the Falkland Islands.

British company Rock Hub Exploration and Israeli firm Navitas Petroleum aim to develop a large-scale oil project in the area known as "Sector C Line," located approximately 220 kilometers from the Falkland Islands, according to veteran campaigners and environmental lawyers challenging the project’s operators in an effort to stop it.

Milei said the project violates a UN resolution requiring the avoidance of unilateral actions in cases of ongoing territorial disputes.

"We will not allow it to proceed," he declared, explaining, "If we permit it, we would be giving the British government an incentive to deepen its occupation of the islands and exploit our resources."
