NATO Deploys Fighters to Baltic Air Policing After Latvian Airspace Threat
NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission deployed fighter jets following a warning of a potential threat to Latvian airspace near the Russian-border town of Ludza, as Lithuania’s defense minister cited intelligence on possible Russian use of “fake” Ukrainian drones against Baltic critical infrastructure.
The Latvian Armed Forces announced via X that NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission has deployed fighter aircraft. The move follows an earlier warning issued by the mission regarding a possible threat to Latvian airspace near the town of Ludza, located adjacent to the Russian border.
Regional warnings from Russian and Baltic officials
Alexander Drozdенко, Governor of Russia’s Leningrad Oblast in northwestern Russia, reported via Telegram—according to Reuters—that a drone-related threat alert had been issued in the region.
Lithuania’s intelligence assessment on drone operations
Lithuanian Defense Minister Rokas Kauṇas previously warned—per EuroNews—that Russia is considering launching attacks against critical infrastructure in the Baltic states using “fake” Ukrainian drones. The stated intent, according to the report, would be to damage Kyiv’s reputation and weaken NATO’s support for Ukraine.
Kauṇas stated: “We have information indicating that Russia is considering carrying out active, unconventional attacks against critical infrastructure in the Baltic states.”
He added: “Russia may use Ukrainian drones for this purpose.”
Kauṇas did not provide further details on specific targets or potential timelines.
