Putin Announces Major Russian Military Restructuring Amid Ukraine War

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a series of fundamental changes to the command structure of military formations deployed in the zone of the “special military operation” in Ukraine. Speaking during a meeting with senior Ministry of Defense leadership, he confirmed the continuation of efforts to restructure the ministry itself, based on lessons drawn from more than four years of ongoing field experience.

Unified Logistics Command Established

Putin stated that a proposal has been advanced to consolidate all rear-echelon and logistical services under a single unified command. The aim is to strengthen efficiency and coordination in operational support. General Valery Solodchuk has been appointed to this newly centralized post. Putin described him as “one of the most prominent leaders of the Armed Forces.”

The president highlighted Solodchuk’s expertise and demonstrated capacity to manage a complex logistical system—including supply, provisioning, and maintenance—under conditions of intensive combat.

New Commanders for Key Frontline Groups

As part of the broader field command restructuring, Putin proposed that General Andrei Ivanayev assume leadership of the “Center” Joint Group of Forces. He expressed full confidence in Ivanayev’s ability to carry out the assignment.

Putin characterized the “Center” group as “one of the most important units” carrying out tasks related to the liberation of the Donetsk People’s Republic, underscoring its pivotal role in current operations along the central axis.

In parallel, Putin announced the appointment of General Pyotr Bulgarev as temporary commander of the “East” Joint Group of Forces. He commended the group’s performance, noting that its rate of advance has received the highest evaluations. According to Putin, the “East” group is operating with notable activity and vigor within the special military operation zone, achieving rapid progress worthy of praise.

Drone Forces Placed Under Centralized Command

Reflecting the growing importance of modern technologies, Putin declared that Russian unmanned systems forces will now fall under the command of General Denis Lyamin, who currently serves as Chief of Staff of the “Center” Joint Group of Forces. This appointment follows an increasing reliance on drones and automated systems in combat operations.

Putin instructed the attending military officials to provide precise assessments of the current situation along the combat contact line, as part of continuous monitoring of battlefield developments.
