Russia launched a wide attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding area with missiles and drones, leaving 4 people dead and dozens injured.

Explosions were heard across Kyiv after the Ukrainian air force warned on its Telegram channel that Russia could fire the ballistic missile "Oreshnik".

A spokesman for the Ukrainian air force said Russia struck the Kyiv region with a medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile of the "Oreshnik" type.

In a statement, the Ukrainian air force said Russia fired 600 drones and 90 missiles in the attack, adding that one of the missiles was a medium-range ballistic missile, without specifying its type.

The mayor of Kyiv said two people were killed and 56 others were injured in the attacks on the city, and 13 of them were taken to hospital. Some damage was also recorded in the city's historic Independence Square.

RIA Novosti quoted Russia's Ministry of Defense as saying: "Our strikes on Ukraine included military command sites, air bases and institutions belonging to the military-industrial complex".
