Russia Pledges Continued Niger Support Amid Counterterrorism Operations

Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that Moscow will continue backing Niger in its fight against extremism, expressing solidarity with the Nigerien people after attacks targeted government installations in the capital, Niamey.

Response to August 29 Attacks

According to the Russian state news agency Sputnik, the Nigerien national forces repelled the attacks that occurred on August 29 with support from the Russian Defense Ministry’s African Legion. The ministry confirmed its sustained assistance to Niger and to the three member states of the Sahel Alliance — Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

Suppression of Military Incident in Niamey

Niger’s Defense Ministry stated on Saturday that it had contained a “limited mutiny” near Military Base 101 in Niamey. The incident involved several soldiers detaining colleagues and opening fire on sensitive sites. Authorities confirmed full restoration of control over the base and prevention of the mutiny’s expansion.

Civilian Guidance Issued

Authorities urged residents of Niamey to remain calm and carry out their daily activities normally.
