Sergey Lavrov Arrives in Niger to Strengthen Security Partnership with Sahel Alliance

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reached Niamey, the capital of Niger, marking his first visit to the country. He arrived from Addis Ababa, where he began his African tour.

Lavrov's visit is intended for his participation in the ministerial meeting between Russia and the Sahel Alliance. He is scheduled to attend the joint session and hold a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the three Sahel countries.

This visit is part of efforts to strengthen the growing ties between Moscow and the Sahel states. The alliance, which includes Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, agreed with Russia during their first ministerial meeting held in Moscow in April to establish a strategic and solidarity partnership in security and defense. They also committed to intensifying joint efforts to combat terrorism and address all forms of instability in the region.

The alliance has gained significant momentum on the ground. In July 2024, the presidents of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso signed a charter in Niamey establishing the confederation of the Sahel Alliance. This charter outlines coordination of diplomatic work and foreign policy directions, as well as strengthening economic relations and security cooperation among member states.
