South Korea Expects Imminent Meeting Between Trump and Kim Jong Un

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung confirmed that the U.S. president is ready to resume dialogue with North Korea, a conversation that has been suspended for years.

Lee said it is possible to hold a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming months, though this remains uncertain.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated on Friday that Donald Trump clearly wants to restart dialogue between the United States and North Korea after years of interruption, according to French newspaper Le Figaro.

"It is clear that President Trump wants dialogue," Lee said during a press conference in Seoul, "and I also encourage President Trump to engage in dialogue" with Pyongyang, as he put it.

In the context of debate over his country's participation in a mission to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, Lee said South Korea will not deploy military assets in the Middle East that could drag the nation into a conflict linked to Iran's war.

Nevertheless, Lee said during a press conference that the government is examining the possibility of expanding its role in protecting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
