Escalation and legal basis
A White House official confirmed that any additional U.S. escalation against its northern neighbor could include higher tariffs and other commercial measures. The official stated that the administration’s response to Canada’s latest steps was anticipated.
This exchange underscores the growing risk of an intensifying trade conflict between the two countries, Bloomberg reported.
The official noted that President Donald Trump has a range of tools available for use in the dispute, which intensified after U.S.-Canada negotiations collapsed late last week.
Tariff commitments and implementation
Trump pledged to double tariffs on automobiles imported from Canada to 50 percent and to impose duties on auto parts starting January 1, in reaction to Canada’s countermeasures.
Although Trump and Carney had appeared close to reaching a potential agreement, talks broke down late Friday. Shortly after midnight, 50-percent tariffs took effect on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, invoked under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 — a provision previously unused.
