In Alaska on August 25, 2025, Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov revealed that US President Donald Trump informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the near completion of an agreement aimed at ending the war with Iran. Putin expressed satisfaction with the prospect of concluding hostilities.

Ushakov also stated that Trump emphasized the importance of ending the conflict in the region and expressed readiness to offer assistance, according to Russian news agencies. Additionally, Putin extended unofficial birthday congratulations to Trump on his 80th birthday.

Impact of Israeli Airstrikes on Peace Efforts

Meanwhile, Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf questioned Iran's commitment to peace efforts following an Israeli airstrike earlier that day on the Al-Ghobeiry area in Beirut's southern suburbs. This attack diminished the likelihood of Tehran and Washington signing a framework agreement to end their conflict on the same day.

Deputy commander of Iran's joint military leadership, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, warned that "Israeli crimes in the southern suburbs will not go unanswered."

Trump's Comments on the Beirut Attack and Peace Agreement

President Trump criticized the Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs, stating it should not have occurred on such a significant day. On his platform Truth Social, he wrote, "Israel should not have disrupted the progress made with Iran." He stressed that Washington is very close to finalizing an agreement with Tehran.

Trump confirmed that the deal with Iran would include provisions concerning Lebanon. He stated, "There should be no attacks anywhere in Lebanon," and warned Israel against launching further attacks anywhere in Lebanon or from any other party such as Hezbollah against Israel.

However, he acknowledged Israel's right to self-defense, noting that Hezbollah's attack was insignificant. Trump described the region as facing a "permanent peace agreement" and urged all parties to "step back now" and not to spoil the opportunity.

Expectations for Agreement Signing and Mediation Efforts

Both President Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday their expectation that the agreement would be signed on Sunday. Tehran, however, has not issued any official statement regarding the timing of the signing.

Reuters reported that a Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran in the morning to finalize the memorandum of understanding. Pakistan has played a significant role in bridging differences between the parties over recent months, while Qatar has recently joined mediation efforts to narrow gaps between the US and Iran.

Details of the Proposed Memorandum of Understanding

Informed sources indicated that the memorandum between the US and Iran will immediately lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports. The agreement also includes lifting sanctions on some Iranian frozen assets abroad.

Discussions on the Iranian nuclear file are expected to take place after the signing over a period of 60 days.
