Trump Pledges $8 Billion Diesel Relief for US Farmers Ahead of Midterms
President Donald Trump announced an $8 billion USDA program to subsidize diesel costs for farmers, aiming to secure support in key agricultural states before November elections.

President Donald Trump stated that the United States Department of Agriculture will launch a new initiative designed to alleviate fuel burdens during the harvest season. Speaking on Monday in Kansas as part of his campaign efforts for the upcoming midterm elections, Trump confirmed the department would provide eight billion dollars in support to offset diesel expenses for producers.
Midterm Election Strategy
This announcement represents the latest in a series of financial promises made by the Republican president to voters ahead of the November contests that will determine control of Congress. The Republican Party currently holds narrow majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. However, Trump’s approval ratings have declined due to his handling of rising living costs for Americans amid the Iran war, which drove up fuel prices.
Both Trump and the Republican Party are working intensively to maintain support in agricultural states where Senate seats are fiercely contested against a backdrop of increasing expenses. Earlier this month, the president signed an executive order he said would expand access to tax-exempt diesel.
Program Mechanics and Funding
Following Trump’s speech, the Department of Agriculture clarified that the eight billion dollars would be used to issue one-time payments to American farmers during the current harvest season. The goal is to relieve pressure caused by temporary market disruptions and higher input costs. The ministry described the mechanism as providing "proportional support to producers" through a unified formula intended to cover a portion of estimated losses for the 2026 crop season.
The department specified that its Farm Service Agency will manage the distribution of these payments.
