Trump Praises Supreme Court Ruling Ending Limits on Firing Federal Officials

President Donald Trump commended the Supreme Court's ruling that eliminated constraints on his power to remove officials from federal agencies and bodies not directly accountable to the federal government, calling the decision "historic."

Trump described the Supreme Court's judgment as a historic victory for presidential authority.

Earlier, Trump dismissed Attorney General Pam Bondi and appointed her deputy in her place.

On Monday, the United States Supreme Court, the nation's highest judicial body, overturned by majority vote a 91-year-old restriction that prevented U.S. presidents from firing heads of federal agencies that are not directly subordinate to the federal government. This ruling followed Trump's removal of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter.

Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social: "It is a great honor to be the current president who won this historic and unprecedented ruling."

He further stated that he regards this Supreme Court decision as one of the most important rulings ever issued concerning the powers of the head of state.

The immediate and publicly stated reason Trump gave for dismissing FTC Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter in March 2025 was that her continued tenure conflicted with his administration’s political and economic priorities. Slaughter had advocated for strict regulatory policies against major corporations and market freedom, positions that directly opposed Trump’s agenda focused on reducing regulatory constraints and easing government oversight of the business sector.

Trump did not base the dismissal on the traditional legal grounds set by Congress, such as neglect of duty, incompetence, or corruption. Instead, he intentionally removed Slaughter without cause, aiming to challenge a 91-year-old judicial precedent dating back to the 1935 Humphrey's Executor case. His objective was to compel the Supreme Court to intervene and issue a ruling granting him absolute constitutional authority to dismiss any executive branch official at will, a goal he successfully achieved.
