Trump Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Iran at Versailles Palace
President Donald Trump officially signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran at Versailles Palace, confirming the agreement was not an easy process.
President Donald Trump announced early Thursday that he had officially signed a memorandum of understanding concerning Iran at the Versailles Palace, following a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The White House released videos and photos capturing the moment Trump signed the memorandum in the presence of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, amid warm applause from those present, with Macron appearing visibly relieved.
Macron also shared a video on the platform X showing Trump signing the memorandum, commenting that the agreement "paves the way for lasting peace and allows the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz."
During the signing, Trump remarked, "I assure you, it was not easy," referring to the process of reaching the memorandum with Iran.
Later, in another video, Trump was seen leaving Versailles Palace and responded to reporters' questions about the authenticity of his signing the memorandum by stating, "It is signed. I have signed the memorandum of understanding."
Fox News quoted a White House official confirming that a signed image of the agreement was sent to Iran and intermediary countries to officially activate the accord. The official noted that the formal signing event planned for Geneva was canceled after the signing at Versailles.
The official added that the Iranian president had also signed the memorandum, and the agreement had come into effect, reiterating that the Geneva signing was canceled following the Versailles event.
The Iranian news agency IRNA reported that the presidents of Iran and the United States signed the memorandum of understanding to end the war in the early minutes of Thursday morning.
IRNA published a photo of Iranian President Masoud Bezhikian during and after signing the memorandum, which displayed the distinctive signature of President Trump.
The agency stated that Presidents Bezhikian and Trump signed the memorandum "digitally and remotely" within close timeframes, alongside Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who signed as a mediator.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said that the talks scheduled with the United States on Friday in Switzerland were no longer confirmed.
Baqaei added, "The Friday meeting was confirmed until a few hours ago, but after the decision for the two presidents (Iran and the United States) to sign the agreement, the consideration of the Friday meeting was temporarily suspended."
