UK PM Andy Burnham Announces VAT Cut on Household Electricity Bills

On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham revealed a new reduction that will eliminate the value-added tax (VAT) on household electricity bills beginning October 1. This announcement marks the first in a series of policy disclosures expected later that morning.

According to the British newspaper The Independent, Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey stated that the energy tax cut will be financed by discontinuing the digital identity program. Healey added, "Many have endured high living costs for a long time. Today's energy tax reduction will offer families some relief regarding their bills and provide reassurance this winter."

The Independent reported that Burnham continued appointing his government late into Monday night. Angela Rayner returned to the cabinet as Housing Secretary, John Healey was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Wes Streeting took the position of Defence Secretary.

Ed Miliband assumed the role of Foreign Secretary, while Priti Patel remained Home Secretary. Louise Haigh, who managed Burnham's campaign in Macclesfield, was rewarded with a key government role as Minister of State and advisor to the Duchy of Lancaster.

Burnham dismissed Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, and Housing Secretary Steve Reed, all known allies of Keir Starmer.
