US Deported Immigrant Released in Eswatini After Secret Program
A Lao immigrant deported to Eswatini under a secret US program has been released and is now being transferred back to Laos.

Vong Chomsavanh, an immigrant previously detained by the United States, has been released from custody in Eswatini. He was one of five individuals transported to the southern African nation in July 2025 as part of a covert initiative involving third-country deportations that drew significant criticism.
Release Confirmed by Attorney
Tien Thanh Nguyen, a lawyer based in the United States, issued a statement confirming his client’s release. According to Nguyen, Chomsavanh learned he was being sent to Eswatini only moments before a military cargo aircraft landed there with him and four other deportees. This event occurred more than a year and two months prior to the announcement.
Transfer to Laos Initiated
The attorney indicated that Chomsavanh is currently undergoing deportation procedures to return to Laos. The initial transfer to Eswatini involved no prior connection between the immigrants and the host country, highlighting the unusual nature of the relocation scheme implemented during the early stages of the program.
Background on Criminal Convictions
Chomsavanh and the four other migrants deported alongside him had received convictions for serious crimes within the United States. However, they had completed their prison sentences before being moved to the Matsapha prison complex. This facility is located near Mbabane, which serves as the administrative capital of Eswatini.
