US European and African Forces Commander Christopher Donahue Resigns
Christopher Donahue, commander of US forces in Europe and Africa, announced his resignation, signaling a potential reduction in US defense commitments to Europe.

Christopher Donahue, the commander of US forces in Europe and Africa, declared his resignation on Thursday, a move interpreted as a new indication of Washington's intent to reduce its defense obligations toward the European continent.
The announcement occurred during a ceremony held at Clay Kaserne base in Wiesbaden, Germany, where Donahue handed over the command flag to General Alexus Grynkewich, who leads the US European Command and serves as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO forces.
General Donahue, regarded as one of the emerging stars in the US military, is expected to be succeeded by a lower-ranking general acting in an interim capacity until President Donald Trump selects a permanent replacement, according to Bloomberg News.
Donahue was nominated for this post by former President Joe Biden and held the position for nearly 18 months, a tenure considerably shorter than the usual duration for this role.
Speculation about political motives behind Donahue's unexpected resignation, confirmed last week by US military officials, has arisen.
The German Press Agency (dpa) reported that the Pentagon declined to comment on the resignation but noted that it aligns with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s initiative to dismiss numerous generals appointed during Biden's administration and to reduce the overall number of senior officers.
