The US Department of Defense has released over 160 files on UFOs and UAPs, marking the first such disclosure under any administration.
For the first time in American history, the US Department of Defense has begun releasing declassified government files on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and related phenomena, following direct orders from President Donald Trump. The move, described as a "historic" step toward transparency, sets a precedent unseen under any previous administration.
The initial batch includes more than 160 files, comprising digitally rendered photographs from eyewitness reports, infrared images, and documents from the FBI and NASA. These materials are now accessible on the official website war.gov/UFO. Among the records are images of elliptical metallic objects that appear from bright lights and vanish suddenly, based on witness accounts from 2023 and 2024. The release also contains historical documents from Apollo missions and reports documented in Arab countries including the UAE, Iraq, and Syria, as well as in Africa without specifying the nation.
The disclosure is being carried out under the PURSUE program (Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters), which aims to declassify files related to UFOs and extraterrestrial life. The Department of Defense confirmed that the releases will continue periodically, with further batches expected in the future.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated in an official announcement: "The FBI is proud to stand alongside President Trump and our partners in this historic release of UAP records. For the first time in history, the American people have unrestricted access to declassified government files."
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth noted that "the previous administration tried to downplay the significance of these phenomena, but President Trump is focused on providing maximum transparency to the American people, who can judge for themselves." The announcement follows earlier statements by Patel confirming that the files had been handed over for imminent publication, sparking widespread debate on social media with reactions ranging from skepticism about the images' credibility to welcome for the transparency.
"The previous administration tried to downplay the significance of these phenomena, but President Trump is focused on providing maximum transparency to the American people, who can judge for themselves."
The release is expected to ignite scientific and political discussions about the nature of these phenomena, even as government agencies continue to assert that no conclusive evidence of non-human technology has been found so far.
