The US House approved a bill providing aid to Ukraine and imposing new sanctions on Russia, signaling Republican willingness to oppose President Trump on foreign policy.

The US House of Representatives approved a bill on Thursday aimed at providing assistance to Ukraine and imposing new sanctions on Russia, marking a sign that some Republicans are prepared to challenge their party leaders and oppose President Donald Trump.
This legislative approval followed a day after a smaller group of House Republicans joined Democrats in passing a resolution concerning the war with Iran.
The House voted 226 to 195 in favor of the Ukraine aid bill, which had been stalled for months, according to Reuters. A small number of Republicans joined Democrats in signing a petition to compel the House to hold a vote.
On Thursday, 18 Republicans and one independent who usually votes with them sided with Democrats to pass the legislation. This development indicated a fracture within what had been an almost unanimous Republican support for Trump’s policies.
The resolution would require Trump to cease hostilities with Iran unless Congress declares war or authorizes the use of military force.
However, the future of the Ukraine aid bill remains uncertain, as it must also pass the Senate to become law. Senate Republican leaders have not allowed a vote on the widely supported bipartisan sanctions legislation against Russia, stating they will await guidance from Trump.
If the Senate approves the bill, the US president is likely to veto the House resolution.
While many members of Congress from both parties strongly support Ukraine, some of Trump’s Republican allies have become more indifferent toward Kyiv since his return to the White House in January 2025.
US aid to Kyiv has sharply slowed even as Russia and Ukraine exchanged missile, drone, and artillery attacks.
The Ukraine aid bill includes provisions to assist Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction and authorizes over one billion dollars in aid to Kyiv, along with up to eight billion dollars in direct loan support.
The legislation also imposes strict sanctions and export controls on Russia, targeting financial institutions, the oil and mining sectors, and Russian officials.
An American official told "Erem News" that Washington is conducting a comprehensive review of its military support to Ukraine.
