These include food shortages, widespread plumbing system failures, and acute mental health deterioration among crew members during what has become the longest continuous deployment in the vessel’s history.

Record-Setting Deployment Under Scrutiny

In a formal letter addressed to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, Senator Richard Blumenthal urged the Navy to clarify conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has spent more than 250 days on deployment without docking ashore for over 200 consecutive days — setting a new record for uninterrupted sea time.

Alarming Welfare Reports Surface

Blumenthal expressed deep concern over the extended mission duration, citing multiple reports of shortages in essential supplies, water contamination, persistent plumbing malfunctions, declining mental health among personnel, and safety concerns related to flight deck operations. He emphasized that these issues collectively point to systemic strain on the ship’s infrastructure and human resources.

Bipartisan Oversight Call Issued

Senator Ruben Gallego separately called for an official bipartisan Senate delegation to conduct an on-site inspection of the USS Abraham Lincoln. In a post on X, he demanded a formal oversight visit to investigate “deeply troubling conditions” documented by families and service members.

Mission Timeline and Redirection

The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego, California, on 21 November 2025, initially bound for the South China Sea. Its mission was subsequently redirected to the Middle East ahead of the US-Israeli military strikes against Iran, which commenced on 28 February.

Families Raise Alarm at Navy Meetings

According to MS Now, family members of sailors and Marines aboard the carrier engaged in heated exchanges with senior US Navy leadership during two recent meetings. They described dire circumstances affecting approximately 5,000 personnel aboard the ship — including insufficient food rations — and demanded clarity on expected return dates for their loved ones.

Suicide Threats and Harsh Living Conditions

Some family representatives reported acute psychological distress among crew members, including confirmed suicide attempts aboard the vessel. Gallego detailed these accounts in his Wednesday post, writing: “Accounts of crew members threatening to jump off the ship are a terrifying alarm bell about how bad things have become: mold-covered bathrooms, no hot water, rationed meals and soap, broken toilets, and grueling 12- to 16-hour shifts with no days off.”

Political Criticism of Leadership

Gallego added: “The way President Donald Trump is treating our troops while waging this unlawful war is not only disgusting — it’s dangerous.”
