White House Accuses Smithsonian Museum of Distorting American History

President Donald Trump has issued an order requiring warning signs to be displayed at the National Museum of American History in Washington, cautioning visitors that the museum presents "inaccurate" information. This action represents the latest effort by the Republican president to exert influence over cultural institutions.

The directive follows shortly after the museum's director, Anthia Hartig, appeared before a U.S. congressional committee, where she faced sharp criticism from Republican lawmakers.

The measure is based on a recent White House report which claims that the leadership of the prestigious federal Smithsonian Institution, which oversees the museum, "views American history as a key tool to promote ideas about social justice and to bring about a radical transformation in our society," according to the presidential order.

The 162-page report, released in March, also accuses the museum of insufficiently highlighting "the central role of the Christian faith" in American history. It states that "white Christian male Americans are regularly portrayed negatively, depicted as embodiments of oppressive power structures."
