AI Agents to Outpace Human Web Traffic by 1,000x, Musk and Cloudflare Warn

Elon Musk has predicted that humans will become a clear minority on the internet within the coming years, as autonomous AI agents—capable of browsing websites and executing tasks independently—surge in number and activity.

Cloudflare’s 1,000x projection

Thomas Seifert, Chief Financial Officer of Cloudflare, forecast during the company’s earnings call that non-human internet traffic could reach approximately 1,000 times human traffic within five years if current growth trends continue. He stated that, under those conditions, human activity online would shrink to a negligible share—so small that people might be treated as “a rounding error” when calculating total internet traffic volume.

Musk responded to Seifert’s remarks on X, affirming that internet traffic generated by AI agents will vastly exceed human usage and calling Cloudflare’s projection accurate.

Current dominance in HTML requests

According to prior Cloudflare data, AI bots and other automated systems have already surpassed human users in certain categories of internet activity. In April 2026, such systems accounted for about 57% of all HTML requests across the internet—meaning automated agents handled the majority of this specific type of data traffic.

Why AI agent traffic is accelerating

The primary driver is the fundamental difference in operational scale between human users and AI agents. A person searching for a new smartphone may visit three or four sites to compare prices, specifications, and reviews. An AI agent can perform the same task across hundreds of web pages in a short time, then analyze and synthesize the results for its user.

When multiple AI agents operate simultaneously—and are integrated with tools capable of automatic web navigation and task execution—the volume of non-human traffic multiplies rapidly.

Human activity remains dominant in key areas

Despite the high share of HTML requests attributed to bots, this metric does not indicate that AI dominates all internet use. Data shows humans still account for roughly 65% of total web activity—particularly in application-based and content-consumption behaviors, including Instagram browsing, video viewing, and map application usage.

Thus, AI agents’ current lead is concentrated in web page crawling, information gathering, document processing, and API requests—not across all forms of internet engagement.

Implications for infrastructure and measurement

If AI agent proliferation continues at its present pace, the internet may gradually evolve into an environment where machines interact with websites and services far more frequently than humans do. This shift poses new challenges for internet companies—from managing server load and mitigating bot misuse to re-evaluating how website audiences and the value of human visits are measured in an era where an increasing portion of traffic originates from AI agents.
