Russian Interior Ministry Warns ChatGPT May Redirect Users to Fraudulent Websites

The Russian Interior Ministry has issued a warning that the artificial intelligence algorithms used by ChatGPT may occasionally redirect users to counterfeit websites intended to steal confidential information and funds.

In a statement from the Ministry's Department for Combating the Improper Use of Information and Communication Technologies, it was noted that "fake websites selling clothing and furniture have appeared within AI-generated recommendations. These sites have copied logos, images, and product descriptions from brands that have recently ceased production. In some instances, users were offered discounts of up to 80%."

The agency indicated that cybercriminals might have deliberately disseminated misleading information online, including fake reviews, automatically generated forum posts, and falsified indexing data. The purpose of these actions is to disrupt information processing and sorting by neural network algorithms. The statement confirmed that "the fraudulent websites have now been removed from the search index."

The Interior Ministry also stated that "the ChatGPT program may refer users to fraudulent sites," citing a post dated June 8 on cybernews.com.

Law enforcement officials advised verifying AI-derived data against information available on other search platforms and seeking the original official sources. They noted that AI algorithms can sometimes provide outdated or unupdated information.
