WhatsApp continues to enhance the capabilities of its integrated smart assistant, Meta AI, by introducing a new feature that enables users to upload and share documents directly with the assistant within conversations. This allows users to receive immediate summaries and analyses without leaving the app.

According to a report from the specialized site WABetaInfo, the feature is currently limited to a small group of beta testers on Android devices. However, it has also been observed on some iPhones, indicating a gradual rollout across both platforms.

How the Document Sharing Feature Works

Users can upload documents to Meta AI through two methods: first, by using the attachment menu within the smart assistant chat itself; second, by sharing files directly from other apps, such as file managers, to the assistant.

Once uploaded, the assistant can read the entire document instead of relying on partial images. This improves the accuracy of responses and enhances the assistant’s ability to understand the context.

Addressing a Competitive Gap

The lack of file support has been a clear shortcoming for Meta AI compared to competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini. This limitation led some users to circumvent it by taking screenshots or switching to external tools.

Alongside this development, Meta has redesigned the assistant’s access interface by adding a dedicated tab in the navigation bar. This tab consolidates text and voice conversations, image generation, and the history of previous interactions into a single location.

This feature is not merely a technical upgrade but reflects Meta’s strategic approach to retain users within its ecosystem rather than allowing them to migrate to competing AI tools.
