New generations often take pride in their environmental awareness, yet a recent study has revealed that children and young people hold the largest carbon footprint linked to their dietary habits.

An international team of researchers analyzed dietary patterns across 149 countries, covering 22 age groups, using data collected from 2000 to 2019. They found that Generation Alpha (ages 0 to 16) and Generation Z (ages 16 to 29) produce the highest greenhouse gas emissions compared to other age groups. This is attributed to their higher consumption of meats—particularly red meat—as well as dairy products, processed foods, and sugary beverages.

The study also challenged the common assumption that older adults are the primary contributors to environmental pollution. Professor Yuli Shan from the University of Birmingham stated that the findings show the opposite: young people exceed older adults in per capita food-related emissions. This presents significant challenges for policymakers aiming to reduce these increasing emissions.

However, when considering total emissions, the picture changes. Although young people lead in per capita emissions, those aged over 60 represent the largest group contributor to global food-related emissions. This is mainly due to the rapid growth in the elderly population worldwide, especially in wealthy countries such as Japan, the United States, and Western Europe. In these regions, older adults account for between 22% and 29% of total food-related emissions, not because their diets are more environmentally harmful, but because of their increasing numbers.

Researchers explain the higher individual emissions among youth by their growing preference for animal products and meat. Although some studies suggest that Generation Alpha tends to adopt vegetarian or semi-vegetarian diets more than other groups, global data indicate they still consume more meat than older adults, with consumption rising over time.

Research shows that consuming just 100 grams of meat daily—less than the size of a typical burger patty—results in emissions roughly four times higher than those from a plant-based diet. Additionally, the carbon footprint of vegetarians is no more than a quarter of that of heavy meat consumers, making Generation Alpha's reliance on meat-rich diets a key factor in their elevated environmental impact.

Addressing this issue is complex due to differing circumstances between high-income and lower-income countries. In wealthier nations, increased emissions often coincide with poor nutrition caused by excessive intake of unhealthy foods. Conversely, in low- and middle-income countries, rising emissions frequently accompany improvements in diet quality as young people begin consuming more food, marking a positive health development.

This dilemma was highlighted by Professor Klaus Hubatschik from the University of Groningen, who noted that reducing emissions by cutting certain foods could unintentionally cause negative health effects in some regions. Governments thus face the difficult task of lowering environmental impact without hindering hard-won nutritional progress.

To tackle this, researchers recommend focusing on education and awareness from an early age, alongside improving food environments in schools and among youth. Encouraging choices that are both healthy and sustainable is essential. They emphasized the need to balance environmental goals with the nutritional needs of each age group, especially in developing countries still grappling with malnutrition. The solution involves not just reducing meat consumption but reshaping dietary habits to protect the planet and maintain human health.
