Two Words Parents Say That May Instill Fear in Children
Experts warn that overusing phrases like "be careful" can create anxiety in children rather than keeping them safe.

Repeated dozens of times daily, especially around active children, the phrases "watch out" or "be careful" may be doing more harm than good. Child psychology and education specialist Dr. Sasha Hall warns that excessive use of these automatic parental responses can be less effective than parents believe, potentially planting seeds of anxiety in a child.
Young children do not grasp vague, general instructions, Hall explained. When a child hears "be careful," they fail to understand what specific danger is being referenced; instead, they only pick up on the underlying fear or worry in the words. Using the phrase across different situations—like running, climbing, or carrying objects—leaves a child unable to connect it to a clear cause or specific behavior.
The specialist cautioned that constant repetition can lead to two contradictory outcomes. Some children become more fearful and hesitant, while others begin to completely ignore the phrase because it loses all meaning over time.
Clear Instructions Over Vague Warnings
Hall recommends replacing the generic warning with direct, specific instructions. Examples include "hold the railing" or "walk slowly on the stairs." Such phrases help a child understand the real risk and learn how to act safely.
She also emphasized that children sometimes need to experience minor challenges and make small mistakes in order to build self-confidence and the ability to assess risks.
Hall acknowledges that "be careful" often comes out as a parent's automatic reaction, so there is no need to stop using it entirely. The better approach, she says, is to follow it with concrete guidance that gives the child a clearer understanding of the situation.
