100 games: Martin finds elite status despite lack of recognition
Gerard Martin reaches 100 appearances for Barcelona, with Hansi Flick and Lamine Yamal defending his underappreciated role in the squad.

Reaching a century of official matches for Barcelona places Gerard Martin among a select group of players who have achieved this milestone in the club's history. The defensive versatile player crossed the 100-game threshold recently, marking a significant career benchmark at the Catalan institution.
Flick’s tactical evolution of Martin
The newspaper Sport reported that Martin’s integration into the first team began during the summer of 2024 pre-season. Hansi Flick included him in an expanded list of academy prospects, initiating a development path that would redefine his professional trajectory. Prior to this period, Martin’s exposure had been confined to domestic Spanish football, even after a strong campaign with Barca’s reserve side.
Flick’s arrival proved pivotal for the young defender. The German coach identified specific strengths while mitigating weaknesses, fostering steady growth that elevated Martin to a level capable of competing in top-tier football. This structured progression transformed him from a promising academy graduate into a reliable senior professional.
Adapting to centre-back duties
Martin initially debuted with the senior squad operating as a left-back. However, the departure of Inigo Martinez necessitated a reshuffle of Barcelona’s defensive line. Drawing on prior experience playing in a three-man defence during his time with Cornella, Martin adapted to the demands of a four-defender system.
He quickly absorbed the new tactical requirements, establishing himself as part of a stable partnership alongside Pau Cubarsi. This transition highlighted his versatility and capacity to execute complex defensive roles within Flick’s strategic framework.
Coaches and teammates defend his standing
Following the match against Getafe, Flick addressed media questions regarding Martin’s status. "Gerard Martin's confidence has improved a great deal," Flick stated during his press conference. He emphasized that everyone can develop, noting that Martin’s current performance reflects his arrival at elite level. "He does not get the recognition he deserves," the coach added.
This sentiment is mirrored within the dressing room. Lamine Yamal recently noted in a press interview that Martin lacks sufficient external acknowledgment. When asked about this perception by Sport, Martin acknowledged the disparity between internal and external views. "Well, yes, perhaps I am somewhat underappreciated from outside the club," he said. He clarified his priorities, stating, "But the most important thing for me is to be appreciated by my team-mates, my family and the coach. That is what I focus on."
The accumulation of 100 appearances represents more than just statistical longevity. It reflects disciplined adherence to coaching instructions amid external noise, validating the trust placed in him by both Flick and his teammates since day one.
