AC Milan Dismiss Allegri Following Champions League Miss
AC Milan has relieved Massimiliano Allegri and key executives of their duties after missing Champions League qualification, with Allegri reportedly set to join Napoli.

AC Milan has removed head coach Massimiliano Allegri after a disappointing end to their Serie A season, which saw the club fail to secure a Champions League spot. The club’s leadership acted promptly on Monday following confirmation of their fifth-place finish, which means participation in the Europa League next season. Reports indicate Allegri is preparing to replace Antonio Conte as Napoli’s coach.
The club’s ownership, RedBird Capital, has initiated a significant overhaul, dismissing not only Allegri but also chief executive officer Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada. This comprehensive leadership change reflects the club’s dissatisfaction with the season’s outcome.
The decisive moment came after AC Milan’s 2-1 loss to Cagliari on the final Serie A matchday, which left the team outside the top four. This marks the second consecutive season the club has missed Europe’s premier competition, ending a previous four-year streak of Champions League qualification.
In an official statement, the ownership expressed strong disappointment with the campaign, emphasizing that the club had aimed to return to the Champions League and build a consistent winning foundation in Serie A. They noted that despite being in the top two for much of the season, a collapse in the closing stages, including the final defeat, rendered the season a clear failure.
Allegri’s return to Milan, intended to revive the club’s past successes, lasted only one season. His first spell from 2010 to 2014 had culminated in a Scudetto title, but this second tenure ended without similar achievements. The final setback was Milan being overtaken for a top-four spot by Como, who secured a 4-1 victory over Cremonese.
Allegri, who holds five Scudetti and five Coppa Italia trophies from his time at Juventus, now faces a rare setback in his managerial career. The club’s decision to part ways with him and the entire sporting leadership signals a desire for a comprehensive cultural and strategic reset under RedBird Capital’s ownership.
The club’s statement concluded by indicating that new appointments will be announced once finalized, aiming to establish a renewed structure before the start of the next season.
