After a challenging loan period at Girona, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has returned to Barcelona, but the club has made it clear that he is not included in their future plans. The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who originally joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2014, has made 423 appearances and served as captain.

Reports from Diario Sport indicate that Barcelona intends to facilitate a permanent transfer for Ter Stegen in order to reduce their wage expenses, effectively ending his decorated tenure with the club. Manager Hansi Flick preferred Joan Garcia during the first half of the season, signaling a shift away from Ter Stegen.

Ter Stegen's loan spell at Girona concluded abruptly after just two appearances due to a severe hamstring injury sustained following his January move. This injury not only ended his season prematurely but also dashed his hopes of participating in the World Cup and coincided with Girona’s relegation. Germany’s national team coach Julian Nagelsmann described the situation as tragic, stating, "Ter Stegen's situation is tragic; it was his turn."

Michel, who managed Girona during Ter Stegen’s loan, expressed similar sentiments: "It is a pity about Marc's situation. It is very complicated. It seemed impossible for him to come here and we have only been able to enjoy him for two weeks."

With his loan officially ending on June 30, Ter Stegen is at a pivotal point in his career. Interest has surfaced from Ajax in the Netherlands, where Michel has recently taken the managerial role and is keen to reunite with the goalkeeper. Ter Stegen’s extensive achievements include 20 major trophies with Barcelona, such as seven league titles, six Copa del Rey victories, and the 2015 Champions League title.

Ajax, while actively pursuing Ter Stegen, is also considering other goalkeeping options including Yann Sommer and Mark Flekken, and has shown interest in Dani Ceballos. Michel regards Ter Stegen’s experience as an ideal fit for the club’s ambitions.

Although Ter Stegen remains under contract with Barcelona until 2028, staying would likely mean limited playing time. The goalkeeper, valued at €4 million, is expected to negotiate a departure from Barcelona soon and potentially join Ajax ahead of the upcoming pre-season.
